Dear Professor Papas:
I have will state a the reasons why I believe that the arts is the theme for myself this semester. One of main reasons is that I have the experience from when I was younger. When I was in high school I played the trumpet in band. Another experience that I have in this area is I've been to museums, and the theater too. During the fours years in high school concert band , all the students including myself in the music classes preformed in competitions in different places across the country. I made the greatest friends in these classes because of band class.

Colin, I'm glad to hear that you have so many personal experiences with the arts. That should make it easy to write a memoir. I'm a little concerned about the observational essay and the argument, though. What ideas do you have for those two pieces? We'll talk in class--if you can come up with some ideas for those other types of writing, it's fine for you to use that as your theme.
